"Until the 1980s, about 2 in every 1,000 people were thought to be affected by OCD. Recent studies have revised this figure to 2 out of every 100 people. But it could be even more common, because sufferers often conceal the disorder from other people."

Obsessions and Compulsions explained and stopped with hypnotherapy

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (which is actually a complete misnomer)

Obsessive actions and behaviours are quite different from Compulsive actions and behaviours and indeed the thought processes of the Obsessive are very different to that of the Compulsive.
The greatest difference is the fact that the Obsessive gains no relief from the enactment of his or her obsessive thoughts or the actions which they repeatedly perform to relieve the symptoms which they suffer but unfortunately this only serves to produce more anxiety and distress.
The Compulsive does have some reward for their inexplicable thoughts and actions in the shape of an easing of their symptoms for a short while at least.

With this in mind here the explanation of the Obsessive Compulsive disorder.
Always common are recurrent obsessional thoughts or compulsive acts. Obsessional thoughts are ideas, images or impulses that enter in a persons thought processes again and again in a very stereo-typical form. The Obsessive-compulsive is well aware that these thoughts "often frightening or disgusting" to person come from themselves but has no control over them.

Secondary Symptoms of Obsessional actions and Obsessional thinking ,the Compulsions or drives

Obsessive thoughts drive a need to relieve tension and ease the suffering of the constant effort needed to control these intrusive urges and thoughts. Compulsive actions, act as a way of controlling these thoughts and so habits are formed and become rituals which in turn become a way of life.

I have listed some of the more common compulsive actions which often affect the individual suffering with Obsessional thoughts and urges

Trichotillomania - an almost uncontrollable urge to pull out or twist hair, which can result in hair loss and bald patches

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) - sufferers imagine they have a defect in and part of their physical appearance, this leads to a need to frequently check themselves in the mirror or try to camouflage the body part (clothes, piercings, tattoos etc)

Kleptomania - a failure to resist impulses to steal objects not needed for personal use or financial gain

Compulsive sexual behaviour - uncontrollable sexual thoughts or behaviour

Compulsive shopping - excessive and unnecessary shopping for items which are often not even removed from the package or in the case of clothes ever worn.

Pathological gambling - Out of control  gambling that results in financial problems

Intermittent Explosive Disorder - violent outbursts of rage that can result in serious assaults and destruction to property

Pyromania - often over looked as a secondary symptom of obsession the uncontrollable urge to start fires, associated with a release of tension can obviously cause a great deal of trouble for the fire starter
