Understanding Stress

Stress seems to have been adopted as the new inexplicable problem of the 21st Centaury, everyone seems at one time or another to have fallen foul of it and even so there seems to be no real way to explain what has happened to us and far more importantly no easy and reliable way of getting rid of it or even controlling it!

 

There are different types of stress some positive and some negative

 If there is an in balance within any area of our lives our stress tolerance levels have pressure put upon them we start to display the symptoms of stress and our coping strategies are employed to help us to re balance the tolerance levels, a psychological version of robbing Peter to pay Paul!

These stressors give an example of the areas which can become the cause of negative stress to the point that stress related illnesses show themselves as coping strategies.

Types of stress:           

Cataclysmic events – Natural disasters, War etc.

Personal stressors – Death of a loved one, illness     

Background stressors – constant but continual low level irritations and problems

How do people deal with stress?

Every single person on this planet is an individual and therefore perceives the world in their own individual way; similarly each person perceives stressful situations in different ways and copes with the stress in their own way.

However as human beings we all deal with stress by the use of coping mechanisms which are atypical to our society.

When faced with Stress we use the following coping strategies to resist the effects of anxiety.

Direct avoidance of the stressor – by moving away from the stressful situation the stress can be lessened.

Information gathering – by learning about the problem the intellectual understanding can give rise to problem solving.

Inhibition of action – freezing or just doing nothing can be the best course of action.

Intra-psychic or palliative coping – by changing the internal environment with the use of drugs, drinking, smoking, eating, nail biting or engaging in meditation etc. are used to cope

Turning to others – asking for advice from friends and workmates e.g mobilizing a network of social support. Asking for assistance from a professional stress consultant, Psychotherapist or counsellor.   

Used in the correct way each of these coping strategies has some effect, however some are in themselves negative choices as they rely on unhealthy or inappropriate behaviour to be effective.

The use of these coping strategies will long term actually cause more stress than they reduce.
